Do children still need to learn their number bonds and tables by rote?
As an elderly person with ADHD I am feeling rather conflicted about a conversation I had with a very lively 76 year old, who still does relief teaching to Junior Primary children.
For privacy purposes I will call her Helen. She has just completed a 3 month relief posting at a private school where the majority of the grade 3 children do not have English as their mother tongue.

A Brief Introduction
Dave and Pat Pughe-Parry have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and we were both in our late 40s when diagnosed.
For the past 20 years Dave, an ADHD Coach, has devoted his life to helping those with, or living and working alongside ADHD, to understand this complex condition and manage it in the most effective way using a multi-disciplinary treatment process.
There is no magic cure.
We have traveled South Africa training more than 7 000 educators and medical professionals and coached more than 1 000 adults and families.

Who Can Diagnose ADHD and/or prescribe medication for ADHD?
- Psychiatrist (can diagnose and prescribe appropriate medication)
- Paediatrician (can diagnose and prescribe appropriate medication)
- General Practitioner (GP) (can diagnose and prescribe appropriate medication if they are competent in working with mental health disorders - they will usually refer you to a Psychiatrist or Paediatrician)
- Psychologist (usually a clinical, child or educational psychologist who can diagnose but not prescribe)
Dave Pughe-Parry does not diagnose any medical condition and does not prescribe medication.
He is an ADHD Coach who has ADHD and has spent the last 20+ years coaching, training and supporting Adults, Educators, Parents and Medical Professionals. He is highly respected by the medical professionals and educators he works with.
Wherever possible we invite medical professionals who are expert in ADHD to speak at our talks, workshops and conferences.
