DPPVolcanoSizedSee What happens below the top of the volcano. That is where ADHD Management should focus.

It shows the three primary signs above ground, those are of course Hyperactivity, Impulsivity, and Distraction.

It is the rumbings and gramblings below the surface of the volcano cone that are not only interesting to the academic mind, but are signs of what the future explosions. It is also here where the best work is done to enable ADDers to manage their ADHD sustainably and effectively.

In this day and age, you would think that ADHD has been around forever. The disorder itself has been around for quite some time, but it was only recently that it was given the name Attention Deficit Disorder. Before that, the disorder had various names that changed over the years.

George Frederic StillIn 1902, there is the first documented disorder relating to impulsiveness. This was in Britain, and the doctor who diagnosed the impulsive disorder was named Dr. Still. He called this disorder "Defect of Moral Control" and he believed that the diagnosed individual had a medical disorder beyond their control.

After this event, the next documentation of similar symptoms was in 1922. Here, the symptoms we associate with ADHD were given the name "Post-Encephalitic Behavior Disorder." What this title means I am not quite sure, but that was the name during this time period.

ADHD: The Condition

ADHD is a complex condition that affects between 8% and 12% of the world´s population. Today there is confusion about how to classify it (see this article) suffice to say it originates and resides in the human brain.

Even the name - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder - that describes the condition is misleading to the point of being largely plain wrong! You see, we don´t have a deficit of attention at all. We actually have massive surpluses of attention - we simply do not know where to focus that attention!

neander marc2025ADHD has been around since just after the Neanderthals and the Denisovians , and maybe even earlier. There two clear illustrations in the Christian Bible, the first being where Esau impulsively sold his birthright to his brother for a plate of stew. The second is where Peter is on a mountain-top with the other apostles and Jesus, and he suggests excitedly that they should all do a property development!

clown maggyBurlettWhat is this condition, how do you get it, how is it diagnosed, can it be cured and how is it best treated? A condition that needs 4 words to adequately describe it must indeed be complex. What picture comes to mind when someone mentions the name? A naughty little boy with too much energy causing chaos in the classroom, the shopping mall, or at home? You may be right - some hyperactive boys may have ADHD, but the condition is far more complex than just hyperactivity.

It is so easy to paste a label on someone. Everyone, whether they have ADHD or not, has at least two or three ADHD symptoms. ADHD often presents with symptoms that may be similar, or even identical to other conditions. Each person who has ADHD is affected differently.

Co-occurring Conditions

Depression JuliusHIt’s true. If you have ADHD, you will have at least two other conditions. Like peas and carrots, ADHD goes with anxiety and depression.

You might not “qualify” for a diagnosis of Anxiety, or as having Depression, you will have symptoms of both in abundance.

All day, ADDers wander around anxious about whether they are in the right place, do they have what they need for what they are going to do, and even what they are doing.

We often perceive ourselves as failure. After all, we do fail, and other people make sure that we understand completely that we are failing.

ADHD behaviour is mostly incomprehensible to non-ADHD people. This kind of experience is a good example; “you can manage a huge company, but you can’t manage your own cheque book?”

QUALITYvCOSTI have been coaching people with ADHD for 20-plus years, and I know that they either have lots of money or hardly any.

When I started my ADHD Coaching Practice I made the decision to charge the minimum amount possible. The caveat to that decision is that the quality of the coaching will never be less than the best I can deliver
